Do I really need MFA on every account?

Do I really need MFA on every account?

Yes. Multi-factor authentication blocks more than 99% of account-compromise attacks. There’s no responsible cyber posture in 2026 that doesn’t have MFA on every account. Not just the admin ones. Every account.

Username + password alone is broken. Credentials get stolen, phished, or reused from breach lists where the same password was leaked elsewhere. MFA adds a second factor — something you have (a phone with an authenticator app, a hardware key) or something you are (biometric). The attacker needs more than just the password to get in.

There are tiers of MFA:

  • Good: SMS-based codes — better than nothing, but increasingly bypassed by SIM-swap attacks
  • Better: authenticator apps (Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator) — much harder to attack
  • Best: phishing-resistant — FIDO2 keys, Windows Hello, passkeys — even when the user falls for a phishing site, the second factor doesn’t transfer

Our Cyber Security service deploys the right MFA tier per role — typically authenticator app for general staff, phishing-resistant for high-privilege accounts and finance/leadership.
