No. Microsoft 365 Copilot operates within your tenant’s data boundary. Your prompts and the outputs Copilot generates are not used to train Microsoft’s foundation AI models. This is fundamentally different from public ChatGPT, where (depending on the account type) prompts can be used for model improvement.
This is the #1 question Australian SMB owners ask us about Copilot. The fear is that putting business data into AI means it leaks out somewhere. For Microsoft 365 Copilot specifically, the architecture is designed around tenant isolation — Copilot retrieves your data, processes it within Microsoft’s commercial-grade infrastructure, and returns answers, all inside your organisation’s compliance boundary. Your prompts don’t train the foundation models.
The catch: this applies to Microsoft 365 Copilot in your business tenant, not to public ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. Personal AI accounts on free tiers may use prompts for training. That’s why our policy recommendation is “use sanctioned tools only”.
Step 2 of our AI Readiness Roadmap configures your tenant boundary correctly and documents it — so you can show auditors and customers exactly what data goes where.
